Yuma Territorial Prison
May 17, 2016
We decided to take a pleasure trip from our Tucson home to the Yuma Territorial Prison, just as a way of enjoying our new car. Along the way we detoured southwest along Route 86 between Tucson and Gila Bend in order to see the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, lying near the Mexican border. During the drive west on 86, after passing Sells we saw some spectacular saguaro cactus displays. Unfortunately though, the road was narrow and we was unable to find a good spot to take decent pictures.
The Organ Pipe Monument was a disappointment, since most of the sights were on dirt roads, some of which required a 4-wheel drive vehicle. With our car sitting only 4" above the ground, there was no way we were driving off-road! So we simply stopped at the Visitor's Center, toured the museum, then walked around the grounds taking a few pictures.
We left the Organ Pipe Monument and drove
west, intersecting I-8 in Gila Bend, where we continued on to the prison
arriving at 2:00 P.M. After spending a couple of hours touring the
prison, we headed to the local Best Western where we had dinner and then read
for a few hours. The next morning we ate at the Best Western's outstanding
breakfast bar and then headed back to Tucson putting a total of 598 miles on the
car.
The following represent the best of the pictures taken
during our trip . . . enjoy!
