January 21-22, 2007
The evening of 1/21/07 it began to snow here in
Tucson. At some time during the night the snow ended, with about 1"
of accumulation around our property. Of course many of you
in colder climates will say, "So what?". Well, snow in the lower
desert elevations is extremely rare as shown by the following:
• We've been here for three years and this is
the first time we've seen even a single flake of snow fall.
• According to the local TV stations, the last
time snow fell in Tucson was in 2002 when 6/10" was measured at the
airport.
• According to some of our neighbors, this is
the most snow they've seen here in 20+ years.
Of course when the sun came up, the snow had already begun to melt, so these
pictures don't show the maximum accumulation. Additionally, the early
morning light wasn't good, so some of the pictures will look a little
fuzzy. By the end of the day the snow was completely gone. All things considered, this event was so unusual that
the photographs deserved their own web page! We hope you enjoy the pictures.

Can you see our tenants in the guest house checking out the "winter wonderland"? |

Within a few hours of taking this picture, the weight of the snow and the cold weather had snapped ALL the arms off the tall paddle cactus at the right of the picture! |

The remaining pictures were all taken within 1 block of our house. |
