In spite of always being handled with great care, all 1,137 of
my 1967-1995 slides now had one or more of the following problems: reddish tint, fading, scratches, embedded
lint and a tremendous number of "pepper" spots in the emulsion.
Considering that the slides varied from 14 to 42 years of age at the time of conversion, none of these problems were surprising.
During the summer of 2009, I converted my entire slide collection to JPG's.
If you're interested, every slide was brushed with a StaticMaster model 1C200 anti-static
brush and blown clean with a Giottos Rocket Air Blaster model AA1900. It
was then scanned at 1800 dpi using a Plustek OpticFilm 7300 slide/negative scanner and SilverFast UScan-SE
software. I then used Polaroid's PolaDSR program for severe dust and scratch removal; IrfanView for viewing, sorting, and other miscellaneous functions; and Corel's Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 to clean up any remaining defects and for resizing and rotating the pictures.
Of course many of the pictures were deleted because of unrecoverable damage and many simply weren't interesting enough to warrant the conversion effort.
Of the original 1,137 slides, exactly 929 have been
"rescued". Overall I'm (somewhat) satisfied with the results,
although I think I'd have been able to do a better job if the slides had been in
better condition! :(
The pictures in the "1967 Saigon, Vietnam" webpage have been presented with a
great deal of information about the overall page and about each picture.
The remainder of the converted slides have been presented with only a title for
each webpage, with the year(s) in the title representing when the pictures were
actually taken. If there's any interest, in the future
I might start adding text to the pages.
